Couples are waving goodbye to the Birdie Song and opting to use an iPod at their wedding receptions, heralding an end to the age of the cheesy wedding DJ.
Wedding organisers at The Lowry Hotel in Manchester have noticed the trend emerging over the past couple of years, but have found that from June 2006, a massive 67%* of those holding their reception at the 5 star hotel are opting to set up an electronic playlist rather than take their chances booking a DJ whose idea of party music may be more Agadoo than Gwen Stefani.
While the demand for more traditional wedding entertainers including classical quartets and rat pack crooners remains high, the mobile disco is increasingly becoming regarded as surplus to wedding planning requirements! Couples opting for this more modern method have complete control over the kind of music that they have played at their wedding and feel that it will give their bash a more individual atmosphere that reflects their personalities, rather than that of the DJ, not to mention freeing up budget that can be invested elsewhere.
As xxx, wedding coordinator at The Lowry Hotel comments:
“There’s been an amazing growth in the number of couples choosing to use an electronic playlist at their wedding rather than hiring the traditional DJ. The kind of people who hold their receptions at the hotel tend to have a very specific idea of how they want their wedding to be and want it to stand out from the crowd. Music makes such a difference to the feel of a wedding and this is a great way to ensure that your reception reflects your taste.”
*The hotel analysed data collected from all those holding their weddings at the hotel from June 2006 – March 2007 and found that 67% had used an electronic playlist rather than a DJ at their reception.
