Salford Girl Wins Search to Find the New L.S.Lowry

Local girl Danielle Delaney, has proved that she has what it takes to be Salford’s next great artist after winning The Lowry Hotel’s search to find a new L.S. Lowry.

Danielle, who is a year 6 pupil from St Paul’s C.E. Primary School in Salford entered her painting as a response to a competition launched by the hotel, asking pupils in L.S. Lowry’s native Salford to send in their interpretations of two of his paintings.  This was to commemorate the fact that the paintings were being displayed in the hotel, prior to being auctioned by Sotherby’s.

Local school children, aged 5 to 11 years were invited to submit their interpretation of the two works. Danielle’s interpretation of “A Football Match” (1960) stood out as having captured the essence of the original and showed that she had the potential to become another great Salford artist in the future.

The Lowry Hotel turned her interpretation in to a print, which will be displayed in the hotel before being given back to her to keep, and Sotheby’s printed postcards of her painting to be distributed amongst her family and friends.

Her school is also planning to use the image of her painting as their Christmas card!

The works came back to Manchester for one day on 16th November, the city where L.S. Lowry was born in 1887 and in which he spent his working life, before they go under the hammer at Sotheby’s in London on 13th December for a combined pre-sale estimate of £1.7-2 million.

The painting which Danielle used for inspiration, The Football Match has all the qualities that have placed Lowry at the forefront of the 20th century British art market. The combination of the grand industrial setting and the human crowd around the football match make this a signature piece.  It’s a celebration of the place which football held in the heart of the ordinary working man and the way in which the teams of the north West dominated English football.

Danielle comments:
“I can’t believe that my painting was chosen out of all the ones that were sent in from other kids.  It was a really fun project and winning the competition has made me even more enthusiastic about painting.  It was amazing to go to the hotel and stand next to a real life Lowry as well!”
