The Lowry Hotel Gallery Set to Paint the Town Pritchard

Adrian Pritchard showcases a selection of paintings The Lowry Hotel

19th April – 29th May 2007 [PREVIEW EVENING: Thurs 19TH APRIL 6pm – 8pm]

The Lowry Hotel Gallery welcomes Comme Ca Art’s first solo exhibition of 2007 in the form of North West based artist Adrian Pritchard from 19th April – 29th May.

Xx year old Adrian Pritchard, who only last year was chosen for a number of exhibitions Including New “Trends in Painting” Leicester City Gallery and “North West Open Prize “ Art Gene Cumbria, was also involved in Liverpool Independents where he exhibited in two group exhibitions one at Wolstenholme Square, the other at Red Wire gallery.

He has been producing precipitated paintings, using the forces of gravity to channel the paint over canvases and objects, for a number of years and has created a number of puddle paintings, which are tactile and sumptuous with contours and ridges born out of the use of the tensions between different painting mediums.

There is an element of chemistry in the way Adrian manipulates the paint, allowing the paint to be paint and interacting with itself. Often Adrian tries to emphasise the freeness of the paint along side formal shapes and structures, creating boundaries and reservoirs that creates something dynamic and manmade imposing it self on a natural landscape.

Pritchard comments:
“Considering the constant defining force of gravity, it is a spectacular assumption on behalf of matter, both animate and inanimate, that it should seek to establish itself upwards. And yet we all understand that in time both mountain and mite are dragged back down. It is this cycle of growth and decay that interests me.

“I make work that attempts to redefine our relationship with matter by using gravity, the very force that universally dictates form. By working with the tensions between friction and fluidity, the dynamic and the static, the imposed geometry of the support/venue and the inherent viscosity of commercial gloss paint, I explore the on-going visual aesthetic. Just as a research scientist sets up the parameters of an experiment, I set up the ground upon which the interaction of self-regarding man and nature can take place, and the resulting work moves from matter to metaphor.”

Adrian currently lives and works in the North West as well as London and Tokyo. His work appears in numerous collections including University College Falmouth, One Aldwych London and the British Embassy Tokyo.

The National Gallery’s Public Catalogue Foundation is to publish some of Adrian’s Cornish work as part of the South Wests public art collection, this is been commissioned by University College Falmouth.
